Twenty-seven states and Washington, D.C., added construction jobs in May, according to Associated General Contractors of America. Thirty-three states and Washington, D.C., added construction jobs during the past year.
鈥淐onstruction has been in a holding pattern for several months, with gains in a small majority of states,鈥 said Ken Simonson, AGC鈥檚 chief economist. 鈥淯ncertainty over tariffs, immigration, federal funding, taxes and other policy shifts is causing many types of projects to be put on hold across the country.鈥
Michigan added the most construction jobs from April to May鈥4,300鈥攁nd Montana had the largest percentage increase of construction jobs for the month鈥3.9%. During the past 12 months, Texas added the most construction jobs鈥28,600鈥攁nd New Mexico had the largest percentage increase鈥17.2%.
California and Virginia lost the largest number of construction jobs (-1,900) for the month and Vermont had the largest percentage decline (-1.9%). During the past 12 months, California lost the most construction jobs (-13,800) and Washington had the largest percentage decline (-5%).
