These short phrases show you have emotional intelligence

Being a good leader involves many factors, and one of those factors is emotional intelligence. How you handle your emotions and those of your team can be the difference between success and failure, according to Inc.

You don鈥檛 need to have all the answers, but you do need to be aware of how others are doing and communicate in a way that builds trust.

Inc. shares the following phrases you can use to practice the five core emotional intelligence skills.

  1. What to say to display empathy. Phrases such as 鈥淭hat sounds really tough鈥攚ant to talk about it?鈥 or 鈥淚 get why this would be frustrating鈥 helps people feel understood and shows them you are there to listen.
  2. What to say to show self-awareness. It鈥檚 important to own your emotions and be honest about what is causing them. For example, if you are feeling irritated, you can say: 鈥淭hat topic gets under my skin, and I鈥檓 working on that.鈥
  3. What to say to show emotional regulation. It is crucial to stay steady and not let your feelings take over when emotions run high. Saying 鈥淚 want to respond thoughtfully, so I鈥檓 going to take a minute鈥 or 鈥淟et鈥檚 revisit this tomorrow when we鈥檝e both had time to think鈥 can provide some time to reset.
  4. What to say to display relationship management. This ensures people stay connected even when they disagree. Phrases could be: 鈥淚 want us to be on the same page鈥攃an we talk this through?鈥 or 鈥淚 appreciate your perspective. Let鈥檚 figure out how to move forward together.鈥
  5. What to say to show active listening. Showing you are truly listening is crucial to building trust. To show you are engaged when someone is sharing something important, you can use phrases such as 鈥淪o what I鈥檓 hearing is鈥︹ or 鈥淭ell me more about what鈥檚 behind that.鈥
